Hate Crime
What is Hate Crime?
Hate crimes are directed against people because of some aspect of who they are, most typically because they are from an ethnic minority or visible religious minority, or because of their sexuality.
Hate crime covers a wide range of behaviour, for example, verbal abuse, racist or homophobic graffiti or physical assault. A crime can be classed as a hate crime if the victim or witness sees it as being so.
If you are the victim of what you think is a hate crime, it is not your fault. You have the right to live your life free from abuse and violence, whoever you are. You do not have to live with hate crime.
Hate Crime has a major impact on our society. Not only does it affect the victim but also their families and friends and anyone who has witnessed the incident. Many members of minority groups fall victim of these incidents which can range from verbal abuse to systematic abuse and possibly murder, simply because they are different to other people. Unfortunately hate crime continues to go unreported here in Wales and across the UK.
Reporting Hate Crime
The Safer Wales hate crime reporting form allows you to report hate crime to an independent third party.
You will have the opportunity to choose whether your information can be passed on to the police or other support groups.
Hate crime hurts, it can be intimidating, confusing and frightening. By reporting it, you may be able to prevent these crimes from happening to you or someone else.
Please don’t suffer in silence, report it and make a difference to your life.
True Vision
Dyfed Powys Police also support a website for victims of hate crime which includes an online reporting form to enable victims to report hate crime online. The website, called True Vision, is supported by all forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and can be accessed at www.report-it.org.uk
True Vision provides information for victims and the public about what hate crime is, why it is important to report it when it happens, and sets out the range of ways hate crimes can be reported, including via a new online reporting form. The site also provides links to organisations that can offer support and advice on hate crime related issues.
