Medical Examination and Health Advice

Medical examination

Examinations are carried out by specially trained doctors. They can take place in a Sexual Assault Referral Centre
(SARC) or other medical centre. If your injuries require immediate
attention it may take place in a hospital.  The purpose of the
examination is to try and gather as much forensic evidence as possible
to assist the investigation.

During the examination, a variety of samples may need to be taken
from various locations of the body.  The doctor will also look at any
injuries and sometimes photograph them.

After the examination, you can have a shower in the SARC and you
will be provided with fresh unused clothes and personal toiletries.

You can take a supporting adult in with you as long as they are
not a potential witness. A potential witness is someone you will have
initially told about the assault.

It is your choice to have the examination or not,
we will not pressurise you. We will try to explain every process and
the reason why it is done, and keep you informed of every step of the
investigation.

Health concerns

The doctor can advise you on pregnancy tests, emergency contraception and sexually transmitted infections.
