Complaints and Misconduct
We want to provide the best possible service to the public. If you feel aggrieved about the conduct of a police officer, member of police staff or special constable then you can make a complaint.
Making a Complaint
There are different ways you can make a complaint:
- Visit a police station where a senior officer will see you.
- Contact your solicitor, your M.P., Citizens Advice Bureau or support agency such as Support Against Racist Incidents (SARI).
- Write to the Professional Standards Department, Dyfed-Powys Police Headquarters, Llangunnor, Carmarthen, SA31 2PF
Details to Give
As much as you can to describe the conduct about which you wish to complain. For instance:
- Exactly what was said or done and by whom?
- Were there any witnesses?
- Is there other evidence such as documents or photographs?
Do not worry if you have not got all the relevant information immediately to hand. If a full investigation is needed the investigating officer will advise you what you need to provide.
How complaints are investigated
When a complaint is received it is firstly assessed to see how serious it is.
If the complaint appears to be minor in nature, a senior member of staff from another part of the force will be asked to speak to the complainant and the staff involved. This will hopefully enable the matter to be resolved locally to the satisfaction of all involved.
Further investigation
If the allegations are more serious, an Investigating Officer from the Professional Standards Department will be allocated to the case.
The officer will then undertake a proportionate investigation, which may include taking statements and interviewing the members of staff involved.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission
It could be that the complaint is one that will be monitored or even investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (I.P.C.C.). The Commission will ensure that the investigation is conducted thoroughly, impartially and to a high standard.
