During April, The Police recieved reports of burglaries where large amounts of scrap metal had been stolen. It is evident that there is an increase in the theft of scrap metal in the Cwmamman area and therefore PC Steve Morris and PCSO Hannah Jones will target this to prevent the theft of scrap metal and hopefully see a fall in the amount of scrap metal thefts in the Cwmamman area for May.

Operation Beagle – we need your help

‘Operation Beagle’ is a multi-agency approach tackling scrap metal thefts in the Dyfed Powys Police area.

An increase in the demand for metals such as copper and lead has led in recent months to Metal theft becoming an increasing crime trend across the UK. Whilst offences in the Dyfed Powys Police area are not as high as experienced in other parts of the UK this type of crime does impact upon our performance.

We experience metal theft crime ranging from the theft of copper (cables, piping, wiring and tanks), lead, fencing, railings, gates, drain covers, catalytic converters to scrap vehicles.

Partners including Dyfed-Powys Police, Carmarthenshire County Council,

Environment Agency Wales, and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, are targeting illegal waste carriers and scrap metal collectors as well as reducing the opportunity for thieves to sell on or dispose of stolen metal items by working with local scrap merchants to ensure they comply with the law and identify potential thieves.

Your help through extra vigilance and reporting any suspicious behaviour to the police including vehicle registration numbers and descriptions of individuals suspected of metal theft is crucial to helping detect this type of crime and helps send a clear message to those involved in offences that they are not welcome in our communities.

If an incident is ongoing please call 999 or in a non-emergency call 101. You can also call Crimestoppers Wales anonymously on 0800 555 111 to report

Who’s stealing it? Who’s storing it? Where it ends up?

Please make sure scrap metal is not left on display – lock it up and reduce quantities by selling it to a legitimate scrap metal dealer

    Remember:

Metal Theft is not a victimless crime, you pay for the repairs to buildings and infrastructure through your bills and taxes. Money destined to be spent on social projects may have to be diverted to pay for repairs.

    Metal theft affects us all
