Drugs

    High Visibility Patrols in hotspots throughout the town.
    Conduct drug searches where intelligence available.

    04/05/2012 -

    • Powys Roads Policing Unit stopped a vehicle at Pool quay. Following a search of the vehicle 10.3 grammes of herbal cannabis and some white powder was found in the car. The driver was arrested and received an adult caution.

      Powys Roads Policing Unit stopped a vehicle in the Welshpool area and following a search of the vehicle and occupants found Cannabis within the vehicle. One occupant was given a cannabis warning on the roadside and the other was arrested and received a reprimand.

    • NPT Action Day
      Welshpool NPT executed a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a Welshpool address. Two bedrooms and the airing cupboard of the property were dedicated to the cultivation of cannabis, with 12 seedling plants located in the airing cupboard, 12 mature plants were located in one of the bedrooms, whilst the other bedroom contained 12 empty pots with plant food, obviously ready to receive the 12 seedling plants once established. All rooms contained sophisticated hydroponics set up to aid the growth of the plants.

      The occupant was arrested for Cultivation of cannabis, and remains on bail. He had not come to Police attention for over 20 years.

    • A Llanfyllin male pleaded guilty to possession of Heroin with intent to supply and has now been sentenced to 21 months imprisonment plus a confiscation order of £1425.00 cash, following arrest in December 2010 during the execution of a drugs warrant at his home address, which was conducted by Welshpool NPT.
      7.05 grams of Heroin, 12 x £20 bags of Heroin, £1425 cash, digital scales and numerous mobile phones were seized.
    • Misuse of Drugs Act warrant executed at a premises in Welshpool where the occupant was found in possession of 96grammes of herbal cannabis. She was arrested for possession with intent to supply.
      Whilst in custody a search was carried out at her home address and a further 240 grammes of herbal cannabis was located, 22grammes of cannabis resin, and quantities of cocaine, speed and an ecstasy tablet were also located.
    • A vehicle was stopped at Welshpool and the female driver from Aberystwyth was issued with a cannabis warning for 4.5 grammes of herbal cannabis found in her handbag.
    • Welshpool Neighbourhood Policing Team executed a positive drugs warrant at a Welshpool address. A clear bag containing cannabis was located on a bedside table. The occupant was arrested and has been charged to court.

    27/04/2012 - Welshpool NMT have executed two positive warrants under the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1 person is currently on bail for possession with intent to supply offences and the other person was charged to court for possession of cannabis.

    12/03/2012 - A positive drugs warrant was executed at an address in Welshpool. A male was arrested for a cannabis possession and has been charged to court.
     
    An estate walkabout took place on Oldford with Clwyd Alun Housing Association, Fire Service, Town Council representative who resides on the estate and a local resident.
     
    A joint visit was carried out between between Police and the housing officer, Mid Wales Housing Association. Local properties were visited in Welshpool town with regards to nuisance from tenants.
     
    Welshpool NPT report pro-actively dealing with underage drinking at a local Restaurant in Welshpool. Joint visits have been conducted with the Licensing Officer to the establishment in the past. Police have since re-attended the restaurant and seized alcohol from 8 underage youths who were drinking it at the table. All parents of the youths have received a letter from the Anti-Social Behaviour co-ordinator regarding  their actions and the licensing matter will be taken up with the Licensing Officer
     
    Welshpool NPT attended a meeting regarding an intergenerational project with Communities First.
     
    Welshpool NPT attended a local business on one of the industrial estates in Welshpool in order to provide Security Advice.

    • YFC Rally
      and Barn Dance took place at Meifod, and was attended by around 1200 persons.
      Welshpool NMT and Special Constables attended and assisted the SIA doorstaff
      with monitoring the persons accessing the event, and any ASB or underage
      drinking at the event. Good partnership working with the organisers and SIA
      staff resulted in a fairly event free pleasant evening for all revellers.

  • Darren Brown

    Sergeant Darren Brown joined Dyfed/Powys Police in 1990 and has spent his career in Montgomeryshire, covering response Policing, custody Sergeant Duties and supervisory duties. Darren returned from Newtown to Welshpool as the Police Neighbourhood Management Team Supervisor in September 2010.

    ‘As the Supervisor of the Neighbourhood Management Team in the Welshpool section covering Welshpool, Llanfyllin and Llanfair Caereinion the aim of our team is to increase our support and engagement with our communities and partner agencies to provide a visible presence and to resolve quality of life issues that affect  the day to day life of our communities’.

  • Jim Baines

    PC Jim Baines joined the police in September 2004. He previously spent eight years working as a volunteer with young people in the town, and then worked for four years in residential care with young people with behavioural problems due to their life experiences. He was born, bred and educated in Welshpool; he knows the town well and this knowledge and his experience of working with young people helps him in his Neighbourhood Policing role.

  • Lindsay Sweetman

    PC Lindsay Sweetman joined Dyfed-Powys Police in 2001. She is originally from Pembrokeshire and moved to Welshpool in 1985 when her father joined Dyfed-Powys Police. She was educated locally, attending Maesydre Primary School and Llanfair Caereinion High School. She has been stationed at Welshpool for her whole police career, but has also spent time in the Public Protection Unit at Newtown, having an interest and training in Sexual Offences and Child Protection. She joined the Neighbourhood Policing Team at Welshpool in January 2008. She is a self-motivated officer and likes to face new challenges head-on.

  • Tomas Milne

    Joined Dyfed Powys Police in March 2010, first posting was to Carmarthen Town where I spent 18 months as a PCSO before transferring to Welshpool Neighbourhood Police Team in December 2011.
    I have grown up in the Welshpool area and was a pupil at Llanfechain Primary School and Llanfyllin High School.
    I have good local knowledge and like to engage with all members of the community.  I enjoy tackling Anti-Social Behaviour issues, engaging with youths and intelligence gathering.  I will also be acting as the Behave or Be Banned scheme liaison officer for Welshpool Town, helping to reduce incidents of alcohol related crime and disorder.

    As a Police Community Support Officer within Welshpool, PCSO Sarah Bebb has the additional portfolio of forging links with the communities' schools. Drawing on her previous experience as a member of the Special Constabulary within the area she is able to utilise this experience to benefit the wider community.

    SC Richard Waldron joined the Welshpool Neighbourhood Management Team in July 2007. A former pupil of Welshpool High School, Richard is currently completing a BSc in Police Sciences at the University of Glamorgan. Richard still lives locally and enjoys working in the community he grew up in.
