T.H.I.N.K. Seat Belts campaign, February 2010
Dyfed Powys Police is supporting the national THINK campaign on the wearing of seatbelts in motor vehicles on all types of journey.
The campaign will run from Monday 1st to Sunday 28th February 2010 and will feature TV advertisements supported by cinema and radio and outdoor activity.
The campaign hopes to change people’s attitude and behaviour towards wearing a seat belt in order to increase seat belt wearing rates in the front and rear of vehicles and to develop a seat belt wearing habit.
In 2007 research indicated that 34% of all car occupants killed were not wearing a seatbelt.
The Mid and West Wales Road Safety Partnership will be working together in addressing the issues surrounding seat belt wearing.
The Fire and Rescue service work very closely with the Police and road safety officers in running Op Options whereby offending drivers are given the opportunity to receive a road safety input as an alternative to a fixed penalty notice.
All the Local Authorities in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Powys have carried out child seat check days and events in the last year and have sadly found that on average approximately 80% of child seats were fitted incorrectly – further child seat check days will be advertised locally in the coming months.
Chief Inspector Phil Davies said, “We would encourage those drivers who travel with a baby or young child on board to please attend these events. Your child seats and restraints will be checked by a professional for free.”
He added, “You are twice as likely to die in a crash if you don’t wear a seat belt. It’s such an easy thing to do and it could save your life.”
If you need advice on a child seats in the interim please contact the local Road Safety Unit in your area or visit http://www.protectchildgb.org.uk/
