Protect yourself from burglars
A number of burglaries at sheds and garages across the Amman Towy area have led officers to issue guidance and advice to prevent others becoming victims of crime.
"We’ve seen several cases recently, with eight crimes committed, mostly in sheds and other outbuildings,” said Inspector Paul Williams. "Most of these offences are happening overnight and in half of the cases, the buildings have been left insecure. And they’re spread out across the whole area, from Upper Brynamman to Llandovery and Llandeilo.
“But the loss of goods and inconvenience of chasing up insurance companies makes it worthwhile for householders to take a few sensible precautions to protect themselves.
"First and foremost, I’d ask homeowners to be extra vigilant and contact police with any concerns over suspicious people or vehicles.”
The following simple steps can also help increase security.
Try and make sure that homes look occupied – so use timers on lights.
- Speak to neighbours to watch over property if it’s likely to be empty for any length of time.
- If you’re having things delivered to your home, arrange for parcels to be taken in by a neighbour of left out of sight - not left visible on a door step.
- CCTV and alarm systems act as a good deterrent.
- Keep outbuildings, sheds and garages locked and secure.
- Clear photographs of any particularly unusual or valuable items will assist with police investigation and insurance claims.
- Fit good quality locks to shed doors.
"In the meantime our investigations into this series of burglaries is continuing. We have now had eight offences reported in our area” said Inspector Williams. "If anyone has information which could help us, I’d be grateful if they contact us at Ammanford Police Station on 101.”
