Police urge vigilance following Caravan Burglaries
Dyfed-Powys Police is urging members of the public to be vigilant following a spate of burglaries from Static Caravans within Ceredigion.
These burglaries have been committed at a number of Caravan sites between Aberystwyth and Aberporth which includes, Quaywest, Ocean Heights and Helyg Fach.
PC Pat Jalloal from the Community Safety Department in Aberystwyth has advised, that “burglars are opportunists - so it is important that expensive equipment, especially flat screen televisions and computer games are not to be left in the caravan. If it is of value to you it will be of value to someone else”.
The call for vigilance is highlighted following a number of victims reporting the burglaries that occurred between November 2011 and January 2012.
We need the support of the public in trying to identify and catch the perpetrators which will help reduce this type of crime within Ceredigion.
The Neighbourhood Policing Teams – Ceredigion have got posters that can be displayed in the caravans and leaflets that give crime prevention advice too.
This is available for all Caravan owners and site owners to display in the windows to highlight that there are no valuables kept within.
Please follow the simple security advice that can make a real difference in deterring burglars:
- When a caravan is not being utilized, remove all items of value including all electrical appliances.
- Leave cupboard doors and curtains open as thieves can be put off by a caravan that is obviously empty.
- Have a secure lock fitted to the door and make sure you use it.
- Have a reliable alarm fitted and remember to turn it on whenever you leave your caravan, even if only for a short time.
- Always close doors, windows and any roof light when you leave your caravan.
- Security mark all valuable property within the caravan as it assists the Police in identifying and return of contents to their rightful owner and may act as a deterrent to thieves – currently there are a number of innovative liquid forensic coding systems, which are a great deterrent.
Police are seeking information to identify anyone involved in the subsequent re-sale of stolen items that includes flat screen television, laptops or computers games.
Anyone with information please contact Dyfed Powys police on 101 asking for Ceredigion CID or crime stoppers on 0800555111
