Police warn of bogus PC security scams
Dyfed Powys Police is warning people to be aware of a variety of sophisticated telephone scams where fraudsters claim to be calling from organisations, which can repair, or remove any unwanted and corrupted files on their computer.
The fraudsters direct their victim to a specific area of the computer and then will attempt to access security details.
IT and Mobile and Static Communication Companies do not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer. Therefore if someone purporting to be from Microsoft or a Mobile Provider and asking to gain access, you should end the call immediately.
Inspector Alan Millichip said: “If you have any concerns about the security of your computer or antivirus software then I urge you to take your computer to a reputable dealer. You should never provide security or card details over the phone. In addition to charging you for work that is bogus or incomplete, these fraudulent companies are able to install software to read your passwords and access your computer remotely whenever they wish.
“I am urging members of the public to reject any engagement with cold-callers and not to fall victim of this offence. Tracking these criminals is extremely challenging as the majority operate overseas.”
