Consultation

Consulting with the public and other key stakeholders is a key element in the setting of local policing priorities for the Force and Authority.

How we Consult

Face to Face

Every year a team of researchers - accompanied by local officers, PCSOs and Authority members - visit locations across the force area. They conduct interviews with members of the public, to find our their views of policing services and crime levels. The latest results can be seen at External Consultation 2009/10.

Victims of Crime

Surveys are distributed to victims of racist incidents, violent crime, vehicle crime and burglary and those involved in road traffic collisions, as well as people
reporting incidents of anti-social behaviour, excluding victims of particularly sensitive incidents. As well as securing the views of victims around their experience of the police, the consultation aims to get wider views on what the priorities for the Force should be in the future. Officers performing well above or falling below the standards expected can be drawn to the attention of local managers.

Town and Community Councils

The Police Authority survey all town and community councils across the Force area. They are asked to highlight the four key priorities for their communities in the coming year. For results of this survey please see the Local Policing Plan.

Confidence and Equality Groups

The force has four Confidence and Equality Groups, which allow us to gain important feedback from minority groups in our local communities. These groups allow Community Safety Officers, senior managers and Authority members to meet regularly with groups who can be overlooked by other consultation methods, such as young people, people with disabilities, people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender and people from visible minority ethnic communities. Representatives from organisations such as Victim Support, Women’s Aid, Age Concern and the Muslim community also attend.

Virtual Focus Groups

The force uses two online Virtual Focus Groups to get people's views on crime and policing priorities. One group is specifically focussed on young people.

Citizens' Panels

Citizens' Panels have been established in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, surveying a demographically representative body of the local population throughout the year. We also link with Powys Council's Citizens' Panel on an annual basis. The Panels are joint initiatives between the Council, the Police, and Hywel Dda Health Board. In Pembrokeshire, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority is also a partner. Results are fed back to the organisations to help them formulate policies and allocate resources. Members of the panels receive regular updates on the results of consultation. For more information see Citizens' Panels.
