How Can You Help Us?

Lay Visiting

Lay visitors check the living conditions, the condition of the animals, and the bond between handler and dog. They arrange visits with dog handlers or can view the dogs without any prior notice

The lay visitors scheme was started in 2001. It is a co-operation between the Dyfed-Powys Police Authority, Dyfed-Powys Police dog unit, the RSPCA, the Canine Defence League and representatives from the four County Councils.

Dogs are assessed on five main criteria:

  1. Freedom from hunger and thirst.
  2. Freedom from discomfort.
  3. Freedom to express normal behaviour.
  4. Freedom from pain injury and disease.
  5. Freedom from fear and distress.

They submit a report to the Chief Inspector of Operations, and any recommendations are taken very seriously and carried out if appropriate.

Most lay visitors are volunteers who give up their time for the love of animals.  For more information please contact us or see Dyfed-Powys Police Authority’s lay visiting information.

Become a Puppy Walker

Puppy walking is an essential element in the development of future police dogs. We are currently looking for people to become volunteer puppy walkers.

Donate a Dog

If you own a dog which you think may be a candidate for police work, please contact us.

Donated dogs should ideally be between ten months and two years of age; be bold and confident but not too aggressive; have a bright inquisitive nature and willingness to play with a toy.

Re-home a Dog

Sometimes it is not possible for a handler to keep their dog after the animal has retired. If you are interested in re-homing a dog, you can leave your contact details with us. Your details will be kept in our Rehoming Register you may be contacted to check your suitability if a dog needs re-homing.
