Powys South is a region of striking contrasts, where industrial heritage meets cultural vibrancy and natural beauty. The town of Ystradgynlais lies along the river Tawe, where remains of its mining and industrial past can still be found in the local area. It also includes the nearby communities of Abercraf and Cwmtwrch. The historic market town of Brecon stands on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, with Brecon Cathedral at its heart. The town is famous for hosting the Brecon Jazz Festival. The wider area encompasses Crickhowell in the Usk Valley, and Hay-on-Wye, a renowned destination for its bookshops and home to the celebrated Festival of Literature and Arts.
