Man jailed for throwing acid at victim, burning his face and eyes

A man who threw a corrosive substance over another, potentially causing him to lose his sight, has been jailed for 19 years.
Jivan Dean, of Llandeilo, inflicted life-changing injuries on his victim during the assault at Tipi Valley, near Llandeilo, on August 14, 2024.
The 24-year-old was arrested following a manhunt by Dyfed-Powys Police following the incident, after he fled the scene, leaving the victim in agony.
Officers were made aware of the attack by a member of staff at Glangwili Hospital, where the victim was being treated for multiple injuries to his head, face, eyes and shoulders.
He discovered he had suffered chemical burns, and that the damage to his eyes might be permanent.
When spoken to by officers, he said he had been at a friend’s address when a man came out of the kitchen and poured an ‘incredibly hot’ substance over him. The liquid made him immediately feel as if he was burning.
He named the suspect as Jivan Dean, and teams of police were deployed to find him.
Dean was arrested on August 17, and was charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm and throwing a corrosive substance with intent to maim, burn or disfigure.
He admitted the offences, and was sentenced to 19 years in prison when he appeared at Swansea Crown Court on Friday, October 25.
Dyfed-Powys Police Detective Chief Inspector Gary Williams said: “This was an appalling act of violence, which was carried out with the intent of causing significant harm.
“The victim suffered chemical burns the likes of which hospital staff had never seen, and his eyesight is likely to be impacted for the rest of his life.
“Thankfully, attacks of this kind are very rare, however we recognise this does not detract from the seriousness of this incident.
“We can only hope that the victim can take some comfort in knowing his attacker has been brought to justice, and we wish him well in his recovery.”
