Action

Shop theft is a priority for Carmarthen Town, due to this the Steal and Be Banned (SABB) was introduced as a store operated scheme to attempt to reduce shoplifting in Carmarthen. This operation is run by local shopkeepers with the help of the police. If you are caught stealing from one shop you are banned from the all. Shopkeepers will meet every month to discuss and decide how long perpetrators will be banned from the stores.

High visible patrols in and out of the stores, partnership working with CCTV and store security officers.

There were 35 reported incidents of Anti-Social Behaviour during the month of August. In particular areas of concerns are Brewery Road, Merlin’s Walk, Carmarthen Bus Station, Carmarthen Skate Park, Matalan Car Park and Woods Row Court. Neighbourhood Policing Officers would have attended the majority of these calls to resolve matters and to provide reassurance.

Carmarthen Police are receiving numerous reports of vehicles obstructing pavements outside West Wales General Hospital and the surrounding pavements and junctions. Meetings are ongoing with Carmarthenshire Highways department and also the hospital to reduce the obstructions to the highway.

Action

Drug dealing gangs are befriending vulnerable people and taking over their homes, people are being exploited and asked to carry drugs.  These gangs are using violence and intimidation to take control of a local area to increase their drug dealing enterprise.

In order to address this we are asking members of the public to call 101 or 999 to report any drug activity in the neighbourhood.  We are also engaging with schools and colleges cascading relevant information onto staff on how to spot any signs.  Drug intelligence is being gathered with a view to carrying out warrants.

High visibility patrols will be continued throughout the patch to gather further information to tackle drug activity by engaging with members of the public and business’ within the area and focusing on hotspot areas.

During the months of June and July the Neighbourhood Policing Team have been promoting The Herbert Protocol with local businesses and residents. This is a national scheme which encourages carers, family members and friends to compile valuable information which could be used in the event of a vulnerable person going missing.

There have been reports of residential burglaries within Carmarthen Town. NPT officers are conducting high visibility patrols in the areas affected and have provided home safety advice to residents in a number of streets. One male has been arrested, and NPT are continuing with the reassurance patrols.

Action

Recently there have been a high number of calls regarding scamming. Residents have expressed concerns about postal scams, telephone scams, online scams and cold callers. NPT are reminding members of the public to never provide banking details when asked, genuine callers will never ask for these details.

NPT have attended to provide safety talks to people who are likely to be targeted by scammers. Such places include residential homes, youth groups, and private residences. Once a month NPT conduct joint visits with trading standards to persons who we believe have been targeted by scammers and joint beat surgeries are also held across Carmarthen. Recently one has been held in Tesco’s.

Joint visits have been made with Trading Standards to ensure they don’t become a repeat victim, and Officers are continuing to education members of the public in relation to these crimes.
