The Dyfed-Powys Police annual awards are a celebration of talent, offering individuals and teams the chance to be recognised and rewarded for their commitment, hard work, achievements and success.

Held at a virtual ceremony on November 18, the awards have showcased some of the force’s outstanding work, with a focus on those who have made an exceptional contribution to policing priorities.

Detective Superintendent Paul Jones has served with Dyfed-Powys Police for 23 years and was nominated for the award by a colleague from Forensic Operations, who has worked with him on some of the most serious crimes the force has investigated in recent years.

Sharlene Watkins, Senior Manager Forensic Operations said: “Paul Jones has been the Senior Investigating Officer on a number of serious crimes that I have had the honour and privilege of being Crime Scene Coordinator for over the last two years.

“His support and encouragement to myself and the team has been exceptional, remaining professional throughout whilst empathetic to the circumstances and families involved. I have been inspired by his leadership and learnt a great deal from him in order to develop my own leadership skills.”

The Inspiring Leadership award recognises anyone, no matter their position or rank, who inspires others - an inspiring leader driven to make a positive impact on the people around them, influenced strongly by their values and those of the organisation.

Detective Inspector Llyr Williams said: “One of Paul’s best qualities as a leader is the way he brings out the best in people. He’s clear on his objectives and his expectations of everybody on the team – and he trusts the people he works with to deliver. He works really hard to motivate individuals.

“It’s reassuring to work with him, as he has a wealth of knowledge and experience in handling major incidents – the murder of Simon Clark in Pendine and the murder of Michael O’Leary in Carmarthen to name a few. He is always accountable as Senior Investigating Officer but is also fair and always listens to everyone involved and takes advice.

“Paul is just brilliant to work with, you can really rely on him to make the right decisions in pressurised environments, as he constantly analyses and questions himself and others to make sure he’s reached the right decision. A very humble individual, that thoroughly deserves this recognition for inspiring others and getting the best from them.”

Sharlene Watkins continued: “Paul stays focused in high pressure investigations, and makes it clear he values and appreciates everybody’s contribution to the investigation. He realises that in order to get a successful outcome and secure justice, it’s a team effort using everybody’s skills and specialisms.”
