Ten years ago, Karen had no idea that she’d be spending her days working in a marketing office and her evenings executing drug warrants with Dyfed-Powys Police. Today, as she prepares to celebrate a decade of service as a Special Constable, Karen’s story is a perfect example of how this unique role allows individuals to experience life on the frontline - even while balancing a busy professional career.
While flicking through a local newspaper ten years ago, Karen’s curiosity was sparked as she came across the thrilling story of another Special Constable in the local area. Gripped by the excitement and the challenge of policing, Karen took the plunge and joined the Special Constabulary in 2014.
Today, Karen says one of her favourite aspects of the role is getting involved with search warrants.
She says “The meticulous planning and coordination behind these operations create an atmosphere of anticipation and focus. I really enjoy being part of such organised events, which, for a police officer, can feel like stepping into a scene from an action movie.”
Karen describes the adrenaline-filled moment when, during a high-stake drugs warrant, she discovered a sports bag stuffed with cash, all neatly wrapped in elastic bands - a discovery that would ultimately lead to a criminal conviction for possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.
While there is plenty of surface-level excitement in policing, Karen says that “there's a deeper satisfaction in knowing that you're playing a crucial role in combating serious crimes, particularly those related to drug use, in your own community.”
Becoming a Special Constable was second nature to Karen. As an outgoing and naturally sociable character, the role allowed her to embrace her strong inter-personal skills, even making long-lasting friendships from the initial training course - many of whom are still stationed throughout Dyfed-Powys today.
After two years as a Special Constable, Karen was promoted to a Sergeant, where she now leads a small team of Special Constables in the Pembrokeshire area. “The role is a complete contrast to my marketing career, which is largely office-based” says Karen, “it has allowed me to step into the heart of the community as I meet and talk with people from all walks of life.”
“It’s a challenging role, and it can often test your limits, but that’s what makes it so worthwhile. If you’re looking to expand your skillset, build your confidence, and give back to the community, there is no career like it. I wholeheartedly recommend becoming a Special Constable, it truly allows you to have the best of both worlds.”
If you’re looking for your next challenge, or are curious about a life in uniform, Dyfed-Powys Police is now welcoming applications from dedicated individuals to join its ranks as a Special Constable.
