During her second year of university in 2023, Kirsty met our recruitment team at an event and saw the benefits of working for Dyfed-Powys Police. She took the leap and applied for an apprenticeship in our Human Resources department.
A role in HR was at the heart of Kirsty’s career aspirations and having the opportunity to embed herself in the team over the last two years has allowed her to gain all the experience and knowledge she needed to complete her CIPD Level 5 qualification in Human Resource Management.
From building her confidence, being part of our recruitment events, taking part in interview panels, and much more, Kirsty now finds herself in a permanent role within the force.
We asked Kirsty what advice she would give anyone thinking of applying for an apprenticeship here at Dyfed-Powys, she said:
“It’s a great opportunity to work whilst studying, you can gain a better understanding for the role itself. I find DPP a very supportive force to work for and have met friendly and supportive colleagues who have helped along the process. You have the same benefits as police staff and not only do you get to meet the colleagues in your chosen department, but you are also able to make connections and build relationships in other areas of the force. I’ve felt supported, valued, and always treated equally from the very beginning”.
After finishing her A-Levels Olivia was unsure whether university was the right choice for her. She learnt about the police apprenticeships with Dyfed-Powys Police and knew this would be a good starting point for her career.
Olivia joined our IT department where she undertook a business administration apprenticeship. She says that this gave her a greater understanding of policing and the work that goes on behind the scenes by support staff which is something she did not appreciate fully before joining Dyfed-Powys Police.
We asked Olivia what she enjoyed most about starting her career as a Dyfed-Powys Police apprentice, she said:
“Support staff have such an important role within the force and it has allowed me to develop skills that have assisted me in my progression to a full time role within the Firearms Licensing department. Starting within DPP as an apprentice has allowed me to work with people in a variety of roles and gain invaluable experience whilst also earning a qualification. The combination of working and learning allowed me to gain and develop skills which have assisted me in progressing in my career”.
Olivia added:
“The apprenticeship has allowed me to apply new knowledge and skills in real-time, gaining a professional qualification whilst continuing to work. During your time as an apprentice, you will have support with balancing the workload and learning from your tutor, line manager, colleagues and fellow apprentices. Take advantage of this support to build your network – the support is invaluable. I can confidently say that completing the Business Administration Apprenticeship with DPP has been instrumental in the progression of my career so far”.

Our Apprentice Programme offers a fantastic chance to develop essential workplace skills. Whether you're at the beginning of your career or considering a career change, this opportunity is designed for you.
