Request

1. For each month from January 2020, the number of hate crimes recorded, split by strand (such as: Race, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Disability, Transgender Identity)
2. For each month from January 2020, the number of hate crimes recorded, split by strand and category (such as: Violence against the person, stalking and harassment, public order offences, criminal damage, and arson).

Response

I can confirm that Dyfed-Powys Police does hold the information requested, as outlined below.

A caveat of the data includes the following:

• The data has been extracted from two separate systems therefore the way in which crimes have been recorded and categorised are somewhat different. Two different data sets have been used.
• There are some duplications of crimes within the data sets used for example, there are 1,232 crimes recorded on the new system within 44 different Hate crime markers, resulting in some crimes being recorded under two separate breakdown categories i.e., Hate crime marker – ‘Racial Religion or belief - Anti Jewish’, has been categories as ‘Racial’ and ‘Religion’.
• There are no crime categories available on the old recording system, therefore have not been included.
• The old system data set had named categories specific to Hate Crimes, therefore the breakdown categories for both data sets are slightly different.

The tables below show the total number of Hate Crimes recorded on each of the old and new recording systems each month between January 2020 to June 2025 (Data was extracted on 18/06/2025).

The old system has a total of 2,494 Hate Crimes recorded and the new system has a total of 1,232 hate crimes recorded.

There are no crime categories available on the old recording system, therefore have not been included.

The table below outline the number of Hate Crimes by crime category, for all crimes recorded on the new recording system.

It should be noted that as a result of the systems adopted by Dyfed-Powys Police in relation to the recording of such information that the information released may or may not be accurate.

Furthermore, it should also be noted that Police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide crime statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the crime data. It should be noted that for these reasons this force's response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with any other response you may receive.
