Homophobic and transphobic hate crime 681/2026

Request:

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 I should be grateful if you could provide your Force’s recorded data for homophobic and transphobic hate crimes/incidents for the calendar years 2020 to 2025

1. Please supply the data in machine readable format (CSV preferred) and include the following fields where available:

• Year
• Hate type (homophobic; transphobic)
• Offence category (e.g., assault, public order, criminal damage, sexual offence, other)
• Number of recorded incidents
• Outcome (e.g., charged, cautioned, no further action, under investigation, other)
• Lowest available geography (local authority / policing area)
• Victim age band and gender (if recorded)
• Notes on data completeness or changes in recording practice (including from what year electronic records begin)

Two datasets have been provided due to a change in crime recording systems in the requested period 2020 to 2025. To note, each crime / occurrence record can have one or more hate types associated.

On the newer crime system, non-crime hate incidents are not recorded as a distinct recording category as they were on the pre-NICHE system.                    

It should also be noted that Police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide crime statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the crime data. It should be noted that for these reasons this force's response to your questions should not be used for comparison purposes with any other response you may receive.
