Request:

I am seeking recorded information relating to dogs seized and/or involved in attack incidents within your force area.

Scope of request

Please provide the following information for the latest 12-month period for which data is available. 

Where exact classifications are not held, please provide the closest available recorded categories. I am requesting aggregated data only and do not require case-level information.

1. Total numbers

The total number of dogs that were:

(a) Seized under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 (including on suspicion of being a prohibited type), and/or
(b) Recorded as involved in a dog attack incident

2. Outcomes

Of the dogs identified above, please provide the number that were:

(a) Returned to their owner
(b) Rehomed
(c) Euthanised/destroyed
(d) Still in police or contracted kennels at the time of the most recent available data

3. Legal or investigative outcome (returned dogs)

For dogs that were returned to their owner, please provide a breakdown, where recorded, by the outcome of the associated case:

(a) Cases resulting in a charge and conviction
(b) Cases resulting in a charge but no conviction (including acquittals or discontinued cases)
(c) Cases resulting in no charges being brought
(d) Cases under investigation or subject to ongoing proceedings at the time the dog was returned

If this exact breakdown is not held, please provide any recorded outcome categories used.

4. Prohibited breeds

Of the dogs seized as suspected prohibited types, please provide:

(a) The number confirmed as a prohibited type
(b) The number subsequently returned to their owner

 

Response 1:

I can confirm that Dyfed-Powys Police does hold the information requested, as outlined below.

1. 50 dogs: seized between 1^stMay 2025 and 1^st May 2026
2. 272 dogs: `Owner or person in charge allowing dog to be dangerously out of control in any place in England and Wales (whether or not in a public place) injuring any person or assistance dog’ offences in the 12 months ending April 2026.

Response 2:

I can confirm that Dyfed-Powys Police does hold the information requested, as outlined below.

Of the 50 dogs that were seized between 1st May 2025 and 1st May 2026.

1. 21 were returned to owner
2. 1 was rehomed
3. 17 were euthanised
4. 11 are still in kennels.

Outcomes relating to the 21 dogs that have been returned to owners:

1x Absolute discharge & contingent destruction order.

1x CDO granted, dog neutered.

1x CDO granted, dog neutered, microchipped.

1x CDO issued.

1x Contingent destruction order & fees.

1x Convicted: Fine, compensation & contingent destruction order.

1x Court case adjourned.

1x Dog exempt to another address.

1x Fine, costs, compensation, contingent destruction order, victim surcharge.

1x Ongoing investigation.

3x Only outcome details recorded: dog returned to owner

2x Out of court resolution (conditional caution)

2x Outcome 15 = Evidential Difficulties (Suspect identified / victim supports)

1x Outcome 20 = Further action by another agency.

1x Outcome 21 = Investigation not in the public interest (Police decision).

1x Stolen dog, returned to rightful owner.

1. 25 dogs confirmed as a prohibited type & 1 awaiting assessment for confirmation.
